Spherical indentation test for quasi-non-destructive characterisation of asphalt concrete

Abstract The indentation test is a promising technique for the viscoelastic characterisation of asphalt concrete (AC). Indentation measurements are primarily influenced by material properties in direct vicinity indenter-specimen contact point. Accordingly, it may become useful alternative thin layers as well quasi-non-destructive AC field. In this study, spherical used to measure linear mixtures extracted from road section. measured complex moduli compared those obtained shear box and found exhibit correlation. further analysed using Gaussian mixture model assign each either aggregate-dominated or mastic-dominated response. attributed response be more sensitive temperature AC’s binder average measurements. proposed method provide tool monitor changes phase non-destructive manner. A finite element micromechanical identify representative scale tests quantify effect on damage propensity.
